Some coffee-loving activists are spreading the word for equality by giving “Black Lives Matter” as their name when ordering at Starbucks. Facebook user Lex Cross posted about changing his name to “Black Lives Matter” in the Starbucks app and the post went viral, with over 45,000 shares within four days. One Starbucks barista argued this plan actually hurts employees.
So let’s break this down.
On the one hand, yes, great job spreading the word that you shouldn’t murder people, but here’s what also happens:
Employees (largely POC working minimum wage jobs) have to put THEMSELVES on the line by saying this out loud to a room full of who knows what kind of people. Why not just say it yourself? Why not put yourself in that position and use your privilege to make an announcement? Nothing is stopping you from getting there, picking up your coffee, and saying “BLACK LIVES MATTER” as you walk away. You get to escape that environment, but they don’t? So how about you use that chance to make a public protest and not force subjects of capitalism to make the protest for you?????
ESPECIALLY if it’s white people doing it??? Like, YOU ARE PAYING SOMEONE ELSE TO MAKE A STATEMENT THAT YOU HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH PRIVILEGE TO MAKE WITHOUT FEAR.
Also, they can just call out your drink order…
this is dumb for 2 reasons:
1. the above comment
2. starbucks already fixed racism
How To Be A Good Ally: pay a servant to yell a political phrase and then run away.
Yeah, let’s maybe not do this.
