Afro-British actors Antonia Thomas (Jamaican & English) and Regé-Jean Page (Zimbabwean & English) have both been cast in the lead roles for ABC Studios’ alternate-history pilot Spark. Set in a steampunk version of 2016, Spark is described as a “lavish primetime drama series of passion, greed, and hope,” centered on the battle for power between two rival family empires, and the rebellious and intelligent young woman who could level them both with her mission to bring power– in this case, literally electricity– back to the masses, rather than confined to the èlite, no matter the cost.
Thomas, known for Misfits, Sunshine on Leith, and UK Channel 4 + Netflix’s Scrotal Recall (recently ordered for a second season), is playing Pin, the girl with the “spark” of invention driving the show’s narrative. Page, who is also starring in the upcoming History Channel mini-series production of Roots as Chicken George, will play the charismatic youngest son of the powerful Lavelle family (one of the rival empires), industrial natural gas titans controlling half the city, who are constantly working to undermine the coal interests of their opponents.
Page and Thomas previously worked together as supporting actors in 2015’s Survivor, starring Milla Jovovich. If a full series is ordered for Spark, it will mark the American TV series debuts of both performers.
